QUESTIONS
Shelf-life questions founders ask
How long does tallow balm last?
There is no single answer. Many water-free tallow balms carry a 12 to 24 month date, but only stability results on your formula in your pack can support the date you print. A balm made with water needs a preservative system and a passed challenge test before any date means anything.
Does tallow balm need a preservative?
A water-free balm does not need a broad-spectrum preservative, but it does need protection from oxidation. Once water, aloe, a hydrosol or a water-based extract goes in, it needs a preservative system and a challenge test.
Is vitamin E a preservative?
No. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is an antioxidant: it slows rancidity in the fats. It does nothing to stop bacteria, yeast or mold.
Why does tallow balm go grainy?
Tallow and butters can set in more than one crystal form. Heat in transit or slow setting lets the coarse form grow, and the balm turns sandy. The right formula and a controlled process prevent it; a heat-cycle test shows whether yours is at risk.
Why does my tallow balm smell like beef?
Because the fat still carries odor compounds from the animal and from cooking, and oxidation adds a stale note over time. Cosmetic tallow is refined and deodorized to remove them, and every lot of GFE tallow is released against a written specification with a COA.
Can GFE guarantee a shelf life?
We will not promise a number before testing, and we would be wary of anyone who does. What we do promise: every custom formula we develop goes through our Stress Test before production, and the shelf life we recommend comes from stability results on your formula in your pack, with the report behind it.
Is the Stress Test really included with every formula?
Yes. Every custom formula we develop goes through the Stress Test on the approved formula before production: four weeks of accelerated stability, a summer-shipping simulation, a packaging check and a rancidity check, with a written result. Bought on its own for a product made elsewhere, it costs USD 750.
Is the GFE Shelf-Life Protocol a certification?
No. It is our own internal protocol, like the GFE Tallow Standard. It is not a third-party certification and products are not certified by it. Results from external laboratories are named as such, with the laboratory and report number.
Will you tell me exactly how you refine, deodorize or stabilize?
No. We sell formulation, never manufacturing methods. All manufacturing is done by GFE, and our methods and limits are our intellectual property. You get the results, the specification your product is released against and the documents a buyer asks for.
