EVIDENCE
Proof, Not Promises: What You Can Check Before You Order
The short answer. Every Grass-Fed Essentials order ships with six documents, and each one proves a defined thing about a defined batch. This page lists them with their limits, says what the GFE Tallow Standard is and is not, and states plainly what we do not claim, so you can check before you order instead of trusting after.

WHAT SHIPS WITH EVERY ORDER
Six documents, and the limit of each
A document is proof only of the thing it measures. Each card says what the document proves and what it cannot prove, because a document stretched past its scope stops being proof and becomes a promise.
01 · BATCH-SPECIFIC
Certificate of analysis
PROVES
The measured results for the batch you receive, held against the technical specification, including the fatty acid profile and the oxidation markers tested before and after processing.
CANNOT PROVE
How the finished product will behave in your packaging after months on a shelf. Shelf life belongs to a formula in its pack, not to the raw fat.
HOW TO READ A CERTIFICATE →
02 · HANDLING AND TRANSPORT
Safety data sheet
PROVES
Classification, safe handling, storage and transport information for the material as shipped, in the format carriers, warehouses and your own staff expect.
CANNOT PROVE
Cosmetic quality or performance. A safety data sheet is a safety document. A clean one says nothing about how a balm feels or how long it lasts.
03 · RELEASE LIMITS
Technical specification
PROVES
What the batch is released against: the parameters tested, the acceptance range for each one and the method used, written down before the batch exists.
CANNOT PROVE
That your batch met those limits. That is the certificate of analysis's job. A specification without a batch result is a promise, not proof.
04 · SOURCING
Grass-fed and grass-finished declaration
PROVES
That the fat in the batch came from supplying farms we audit, and that those farms raise and finish the animals on grass, stated for the batch rather than as a general slogan.
CANNOT PROVE
That grass-fed alone makes a better balm. Diet is a sourcing fact. The measured fatty acid profile is on the certificate of analysis, and that is where quality is read.
05 · CHAIN OF RECORDS
Source traceability
PROVES
The chain from supplying farm to rendered fat to finished batch, drawn from the records we keep at each step, so a question about origin has a record behind it.
CANNOT PROVE
Anything about a batch outside that chain. Traceability is only as good as the record for the batch in front of you, which is why it is issued per batch.
06 · SHIPPING
Export documentation
PROVES
What left South Africa, under which terms, with the insurance and customs paperwork a US import needs, so the shipment that arrives is the shipment that was released.
CANNOT PROVE
Product quality. Customs paperwork proves the shipment is the shipment. The certificate of analysis proves what is in it.
THE GFE TALLOW STANDARD
An internal specification with four pillars
The GFE Tallow Standard is the written specification we refine our tallow to. It is internal: we wrote it and we hold ourselves to it. It is not a certification, and no third party has certified Grass-Fed Essentials against it. What it gives you is a written standard to hold a batch certificate against.
PILLAR 01
Sourcing
Raw fat comes from farms we audit. The standard sets what we accept from them, so sourcing is a decision made on record rather than a slogan on a label.
PILLAR 02
Refining
How the fat is rendered and refined in-house, with the controls that take it from raw fat to a cosmetic-grade material that meets the written specification.
PILLAR 03
Oxidation control
Oxidation markers are tested before and after processing. The pair of results shows whether processing protected the fat or spent its shelf life.
PILLAR 04
Traceability
Records tie each batch back to its source, so the declaration and the traceability document in your order are drawn from records, not written afterward.
WHAT WE DO NOT CLAIM
Four things you will not read on this site
A proof page is only worth reading if it also says where the proof stops. These are the claims we could make loosely and choose not to.
FDA-registered is not FDA-approved
Our facility is registered with the FDA, which means it is listed with the agency. The FDA does not approve cosmetic products or the facilities that make them, so no cosmetic manufacturer can claim approval, and we do not.
The previous premises' ISO 22716 certificate does not apply here
Grass-Fed Essentials held an ISO 22716:2007 certificate (UQ-2024092503, September 2024) for its previous premises. We have since moved. That certificate does not cover the facility that makes your product today, so we do not present it as a current claim.
The quality system is being built to ISO 22716
Being built means exactly that. The quality system at the current facility is not certified, and we will not describe it as certified until an auditor says so. Ask us where it stands on the day you order.
Our documents support cosmetic language only
Every document on this page describes a cosmetic material and a cosmetic product. None of them supports a claim that a product treats or prevents anything, and the GFE Tallow Standard is a specification, not a certification.
SAMPLE CERTIFICATE
Request a sample certificate of analysis
See the format and the parameters before you order. The sample shows what a batch certificate reports and how; your own batch results come with your order.
We keep the sample for brand founders and buyers, so we ask who you are first and send it by email after a quick review.
WHAT THE SAMPLE SHOWS
- The parameters a batch certificate reports, including the fatty acid profile and oxidation markers.
- The acceptance range each result is held against, taken from the technical specification.
- The layout, so your own quality check knows what to expect before the first batch lands.
QUESTIONS BUYERS ASK
Before you order: the questions we hear most
Is the certificate of analysis specific to my batch?
Yes. The certificate that ships with your order reports the results for the batch you receive, held against the technical specification. A generic or historical certificate shows the format, not your batch, and we do not present one as proof for a batch it does not describe.
Can I see a certificate before I order?
Yes. Request a sample certificate of analysis on this page. We send it by email after a quick review. The sample shows the parameters and the layout; your own batch results arrive with your order.
Does FDA registration mean the facility was inspected or approved?
No. Registration lists the facility with the FDA. It is not an approval and it is not an inspection result. The FDA does not approve cosmetic products or the facilities that make them, so no cosmetic manufacturer can claim that, and we do not.
Is the GFE Tallow Standard a certification?
No. It is the internal specification Grass-Fed Essentials refines its tallow to, covering sourcing, refining, oxidation control and traceability. No third party has certified us against it. Its value to you is a written standard that a batch certificate can be held against.
