Questions to Ask a Tallow Contract Manufacturer

Use the same questions with every candidate; including us, and compare the answers side by side.

5 MIN READ

Sourcing

  • Where does your tallow come from, and how is the source qualified?
  • What documentation accompanies the raw material into your facility?
  • If your sourcing changes, do clients find out before or after production?
  • Can the sourcing story you tell me be supported on paper?

Processing and quality

  • How do you control heat and oxidation exposure during production?
  • What does a batch record contain, and how long is it retained?
  • What checks run during and after production, and against what specification?
  • Do you retain samples from each batch? What happens when something is out of specification?
"What will you refuse to put on a label?" is the most revealing question on this list. A manufacturer with no answer has no line.

Development

  • What does your sampling process look like; rounds, feedback format, typical iteration?
  • Who owns a formula you develop for me, and is that in writing?
  • How do you support packaging selection and label accuracy?
  • What will you refuse to put on a label?

Commercial

  • What are the minimum volumes for my product format, and what drives them?
  • What are current lead times for sampling and for production?
  • How is pricing structured, and what makes it move?
  • Who is my contact after the first order, and how fast do questions get answered?

Reading the answers

You are not scoring for perfection; you are scoring for specificity. Confident, concrete answers about sourcing, records and failure handling describe a real system. Vagueness on those same questions is itself the answer. Fuller context on each area is in how to choose a tallow skincare manufacturer, and our own answers start on the manufacturing page.
