Grass Fed Versus Grass Finished Tallow
The terms sound interchangeable. For sourcing, and for what you print on a label; they are not.
What "grass-fed" means
Nearly all cattle spend the early part of their lives on pasture, so "grass-fed" on its own does not tell you how the animal was fed for its whole life. Without further qualification, it can describe an animal that was later finished on grain.
What "grass-finished" adds
"Grass-finished" (or "100% grass-fed") indicates the animal remained on pasture and forage through the finishing period as well. It is the stricter claim, the smaller supply pool, and the one that requires the most care to verify and maintain consistently at commercial volume.
Why the distinction matters for skincare sourcing
For a skincare brand this is primarily a claims and consistency question. Whatever appears on your label or website must match what your supply chain can document, batch after batch, not just what the first sample was. Describing your sourcing accurately is a stronger position than promising outcomes no document supports.
What to verify with a supplier
- A written sourcing description, not a phrase on an invoice.
- Whether the claim is documented, and by what: supplier declarations, certifications, purchase records.
- Consistency; is the same sourcing maintained across reorders, and are you notified of changes?
- What appears on the specification and CoA versus what appears only in marketing.
